What kind of questions will I be asked if I have to call 911?

We will ask the basic information about the situation. What is going on, who is there, etc. We will also verify your address, name and telephone number. If it’s a medical emergency, we will ask further questions about the medical emergency and then may be able to provide instructions to you on how to help until the ambulance arrives. Be assured that even though we are asking many questions, help is being sent to you.

When should I call 911?

You should use 911 only for emergencies. You should use it when you need police, fire, or EMS immediately. 911 is not to be used for routine questions or to get general information. For those inquiries, please use the main number at (203) 312-5701.

How do I know if my address information is correct?

All information for 911 comes directly from the information that your service provider has. Therefore, if you phone bills come with the correct name, address, and phone number, your information will appear on our screen if you have to call 911. Even if you are unlisted, the information will still appear on our screen.

If I call 911 from my cell phone, who will answer?

The closest cell tower that picks up your call will route you to the nearest dispatch center. Therefore, if you hit a tower in New Fairfield, you will be sent to us. If you hit another town, you will be directed to that town’s center. Its important to listen to the dispatcher when they answer as they will respond with the town name, (“New Fairfield 911). If you get a different town, ask to be connected to the town the emergency is in. Some cellular phones allow us to pinpoint your location on a map, while others do not. Its important to give the dispatcher your EXACT location when calling. If you do not know your location, give them as many details as you can (last road you were on, any landmarks, etc.) so that we can send help to you.

Does 911 work with the internet phones?

With most of the internet phone companies, if you call 911 from your house you will be directed to the right dispatch center. Charter and Vonage, for example, have been tested are sent directly to our center. Its important to ask your company if the interface with the State of Connecticut’s 911 and to make sure that they have your correct address.

What do I do if I accidentally call 911?

Stay on the phone. The dispatcher will verify that there is no problem at your house and will verify your information (address, name, and phone number).

I want to enroll in the Alertnow program, how do I do that?

The easiest way to obtain a form from this site and then submit it to the communications center. Once received, the information will be entered into the system and you will receive any emergency calls.

Do I need a permit to have an alarm in my house?

Yes. By town ordinance, all alarms in homes or businesses must obtain a permit from the Communications Center. The fee is $25.00 and is good for two years. Forms are available on this site to obtain a permit for your alarm along with information on fees / fines, and the ordinance itself.
